These terms have been defined in an attempt to help those individuals without a background in agriculture/mehcanics better undertsand some of the terms in these pages. In time, this list will grow, and I will provide links into this page for easier use.

Glossary of terms

belt horsepower
tractor horsepower measured at the belt pulley or power take-off shaft.
drawbar horsepower
tractor horsepower measured at the tractor's drawbar. This measurement includes the power required to move the tractor as well.
Continental
Many Massey-Harris motors, including the H260, H277 and HD260 engines were built by Massey-Harris after a design created by Continental Engines. These motors have been used in a variety of farm and industrial equipment applications.
HA
Massey-Harris designation for Hi-arch axle
power take-off
power take-off or PTO was been developed to provide implement manufacturers and tractor manufacturers with a common method of powering implements. It consistes of a splined shaft on the tractor which matches a shaft and coupler connected to a powered implement. The PTO shaft on the tractor is driven by the engine through the transmission. Live or continuous PTO was developed so that an implement could be powered while the tractor's transmission was declutched from the engine, or while the tractor was stopped. Massey-Harris' first implementation of live PTO involved a clutch on the differential which detatched power to one of the drive wheels when the operator wanted to stop the tractor but keep the PTO running. Later developments involved using a separate clutch for both transmission and PTO.
RS
Massey-Harris designation for Row-crop, single front wheel (tricycle).
RT
Massey-Harris designation for Row-crop, twin front wheel.
RC
Row-Crop: a tractor model that typically has higher ground clearance and adjustable tread width to accomodate the working of crops grown in rows of various widths.
sleeves
Sleeves are tubular inserts placed into the engine block to serve as the cylinder bore. This allows complete replacement of the cylinder bore without reboring the block to a larger size. Sleeves can be either wet or dry. Wet sleeves are inserted directly into the engine's water jacket to allow for more effecient cooling of the cylinder. Dry sleeves are inserted into a cast bore in the engine block, requiring a thermal transfer between the sleeve and the engine block, and the engine block and the coolant.
Std
Massey-Harris designation for Standard Tread
